Large-Board Governance, Treasury & Compliance Reporting
How I built financial visibility, board reporting, treasury discipline, long-range forecasting, audit coordination, and compliance support for a complex cooperative operating model.
At Western Fuels, I stepped into a nonprofit cooperative environment with complex governance, treasury needs, transportation assets, related operations, and multi-jurisdiction compliance requirements. The work required bringing finance functions in-house, strengthening accounting and reporting processes, supporting a large board structure, managing cash visibility, coordinating audits, and building long-range planning tools.
The Operating Problem
The organization needed stronger in-house finance infrastructure for a complex cooperative model involving significant cash activity, board oversight, related operating assets, transportation activity, audit coordination, and sales/use tax compliance across many jurisdictions.
Leadership and board stakeholders needed financial information that was accurate, timely, understandable, and useful for decision-making. The finance function also needed to support annual budgets, capital planning, long-range forecasting, audit work, tax compliance, and treasury visibility in an environment with large transaction swings and a complex governance structure.
What Changed
The work helped create stronger financial visibility, more reliable reporting, clearer budget and forecast processes, and better support for board and audit stakeholders. Finance became more directly managed in-house, treasury activity became easier to monitor, and complex compliance and asset-related reporting became more structured.
The result was a more durable finance and governance operating model for a high-complexity cooperative environment with significant cash activity, long-range planning needs, board oversight, audit requirements, and compliance obligations.
What I Led
01 - Finance Function Buildout
Brought accounting and finance processes in-house, including AP/AR, payroll, fixed assets, general ledger, cash management, close, financial reporting, and audit coordination.
02 - Board & Governance Reporting
Prepared financial statements, variance analysis, board materials, and financial reporting for a large governance structure with board members and other participating stakeholders.
03 - Treasury & Cash Visibility
Managed cash visibility and treasury workflows through significant monthly transaction swings while maintaining operating reserve awareness and leadership visibility.
04 - Budgeting, Forecasting & Long-Range Planning
Built annual operating and capital budgets and supported 10- to 15-year forecasts across cooperative operations, subsidiaries, and related assets.
05 - Compliance, Audit & Complex Asset Reporting
Managed audit coordination, sales/use tax compliance, financial reporting for related operating assets, and documentation needed to support a complex cooperative and transportation operating model.
What This Demonstrates
This case study demonstrates my ability to build finance infrastructure in organizations with complex governance, treasury, compliance, audit, and long-range planning needs. I can bring accounting functions in-house, support large board structures, manage cash visibility, coordinate audits, and turn complicated operating activity into usable financial information for leadership and oversight.
